Building MyDigitally: The Journey to Protecting Our Digital Legacies
We spend years building our lives online. We buy domain names, accumulate thousands of dollars in gaming libraries, grow monetized YouTube channels, and pay for lifetime software subscriptions.
Yet, if you look at a standard bank statement or a traditional physical will, none of these assets exist. If something happens to you, those accounts often vanish into the digital ether, leaving your loved ones locked out and billions of dollars in value completely lost.
That is why I built MyDigitally (mydigitally.app). The app evolved from a simple core inventory tool into a complete, secure digital vault ecosystem.
Why MyDigitally is Needed
The problem is simple: our digital lives are worth more than we realize, and they are completely undocumented.
- Value is Lost: When someone passes away, lifetime licenses expire and websites go dark simply because nobody knew they existed. An estimated $60 billion in digital assets goes unclaimed or inaccessible every single year.
- Access is Blocked: Even though modern laws give estate executors the legal authority to manage digital accounts, tech platforms won’t release access without prior proof and documentation.
- The Market is Broken: People buy and sell social media handles, domains, and online businesses every day, but they do it via sketchy direct messages using screenshots that can easily be faked. Buyers can’t verify ownership, and sellers can’t easily showcase what they have.
What is MyDigitally and How Does It Work?
MyDigitally is a secure, personal digital asset vault. Think of it as a clear inventory layer for everything you own online.
You log in, add your online assets, categorize them, note their estimated value, and upload real proof of ownership (like a receipt or a registration screenshot).
When it’s time to do estate planning or prove your ownership to a buyer, MyDigitally allows you to generate a clean, secure, shareable web link or export a beautiful PDF portfolio. You can hand this directly to an estate attorney, a family member, or a prospective buyer. They don’t even need an account to view it.
The Version History: How the App Was Built
The app didn’t appear overnight. It was built systematically across distinct milestones, with a deep focus on security, simplicity, and ease of use.
Milestone 1: The Core Vault
The foundation was all about security and basic asset tracking.
- Secure Logins: Created a rock-solid email and password system where your data is entirely private and accessible only by you.
- The Inventory System: Built the core forms allowing users to add, edit, view, and delete their digital assets with fields for estimated value, acquisition dates, and notes.
- Elegant Look: Implemented a clean design featuring a dark mode option tailored to adapt seamlessly to your device’s settings.
Milestone 2: Custom Organization & Seamless Sharing
Once the foundation was laid, the focus shifted to making the data functional and shareable for the real world.
- Personalized Categories: Users gained the ability to create custom categories with unique color tags and icons to organize their assets exactly how they want.
- One-Click Share Links: Designed a system to bundle specific assets into a stable “snapshot” link. If you update the original asset later, the shared link stays locked in time so your legal documents remain accurate.
- Legal-Ready PDF Exports: Added a custom generator that streams a beautiful, printable PDF document directly to your device—ideal for attaching to a traditional will.
- Mobile Friendly Layout: Redesigned the entire interface with a collapsing sidebar menu and mobile top bar so you can update your vault on your phone just as easily as on a desktop.
Milestone 3: Verifiable Proof & Public Profiles
The most recent updates added visual security and transparency features.
- Proof-of-Ownership Uploads: Built a secure drag-and-drop file uploader. You can now attach images or PDF receipts up to 5 MB directly to an asset to prove it’s genuinely yours.
- Avatar Management: Added personal profile pictures that display across your dashboard and public pages.
- Public Vault Profiles: Created a way for digital creators or domain investors to opt-in to a public portfolio page (
mydigitally.app/u/username). This gives you a credible, professional landing page to show buyers exactly what assets you legally own and manage.
What’s Coming Next?
While the core vault and sharing systems are fully complete and functional, the long-term vision is to tackle the Transfer Marketplace.
Soon, MyDigitally will feature an official, escrow-protected marketplace where creators, gamers, and domain investors can safely list, verify, buy, and sell digital assets without the fear of scams.
Your digital life is worth protecting. Building a vault takes less than a few minutes, but the peace of mind it brings your family is permanent.
